Years ago when Cinco de Mayo became something Americans started to celebrate, I did wonder why that date was so important. But, couldn't find anyone who knew it as anything other than an excuse to get drunk & eat Mexican food. A day came when someone -- I suppose of Mexican origin -- told me what it was about. Too bad the reason behind it didn't relate to me, as I promptly forgot. Was it celebrating the winning of a war? Was it, perhaps, like Bastille Day, the release of some or all prisoners in some Mexican prison?
Whatever. All it means to the average, white American is another excuse to party -- of which we have many.
As in the past, I feel the same today...Why do people need excuses? Are we incapable of doing away with denial & simply do what we do for the sake of doing it?
